Not knowing what you want to be is OK, but it’s great to start with something. Maybe you always played with LEGOs as a kid and love to build. Or maybe you’re like Danny, one of our amazing interns, who has an eye for fashion. In these days, the Internet is the way to get the word out, maybe you like to build websites, enjoy graphic design, or writing. More often than not, your interests translate directly to possible careers; it’s just about digging a little bit to find the perfect mix.

You have to believe in yourself, follow your passions, and dream big! Rarely do opportunities fall into your lap, so go take opportunities and make the best of them.

The goal is to have a career path in mind, as well as the major that can help you get there. You can always change it later, but it’s important be proactive in your search.

Here are a few tips that might help make the decision a little easier:
  • You can double major or even minor in another field, which is a good way to make yourself as dynamic as possible. Like art? Then go for it! But a minor in business management is going to come in handy when you’ve got a pile of art and need to figure out how to sell it.
  • Think about how your interests might facilitate various career options. If you’re great at math but also love colors and shapes, design could be a perfect fit for you. At the same time, you could become a math teacher and incorporate design into your lesson plans. Think on your feet.
  • The possibilities are endless! Ask friends and family about things they tried, or what they think might suit you. Advice isn’t always easy to take, but the people who know you the best are sure to give you some valuable perspective. MyNextMove.org and WiseGeek.com have lots of great information on how to pursue the career of your choice.
As a high school student, you’re in the perfect position to mold your future. Take your time to figure out what you are passionate about!
