How to Choose a Major

Picking your major for college is pretty, well, major. It’s one of those decisions that can change the course of your life. I mean, you’re going to be in a classroom for 12 hours a week, for four years, learning about a subject that you’re then supposed to turn into a career. If you’re at home stressing about what direction you should take with your college career, my advice to you is: don’t sweat it. You’ll figure out what you want to do in due time.

It’s not something you can rush. Just play to your strengths and what you’re passionate about.

It took me three years of college and two major changes to figure out what I really wanted to do. A friend of mine went from wanting to be a doctor, to urban planning, to eventually working in music. Figuring out what you want to do in life is really about trial and error - as you delve into new areas, it will sort itself out. You’ll feel it when your passion converges with your career aspirations.

Picking a major, while a big decision, is also a bit overrated. Lots of people who graduate from college are not in the field they earn a degree in, which is really a testament to college in general. Don’t believe me? Stop a random stranger and ask. I guarantee you’ll meet a talent agent who got their B.A. in Art History. So if you jumped the gun when the college advisor asked you what degree you wanted to pursue, don’t worry. If you’re close enough to graduation, finish up your degree, but get involved and find resources in relation to the things that you want to make a career out of.

In the following video, you get an idea of how some students thought about choosing their own major. It’s a decision not to be taken lightly, but it also doesn’t make or break anything. Relax, take a deep breath, and don’t sweat it.
